Review of Ghost World (2001) by Pranoy M — 01 Aug 2010
Ghost World is a bizzare film, which I have to admit isn't immediately likeable. The first time I saw it I didn't really like it, but the second time I saw it I changed my mind. Ghost World is a quirky and mentally thought provoking film about two misfits who begin to grow apart after their graduation as one of them befriends and becomes attached to a lonely and socially awkward man. I thought that Thora Birch was terrific and is a star in the making, but Scarlett Johansson was mediocre. The style of the film is strange and it has a cynical tone, which can be off putting, but Ghost World does depicts some deep issues, such as social alienation. However I wouldn't view this film as a comedy, as one I didn't think it was particularly humorous and two, I think the tone is too bland. Also I didn't think that the characters were likeable and it's hard to empathize with them. On the other hand Ghost World is unique, interesting and partly entertaining. It leaves you feeling in a weird sort of mood afterwards. It's worth a watch, but it's not really a favourite. It's also a bit too overrated.
Grade: B-.
