Review of Ghost Stories (2018) by Patipan I — 04 Nov 2018
I knew nothing of the film when I chose it from the board with 20 other films that were showing, it was a rainy miserable night and I needed to kill some time so I chose Ghost Stories, it was the first time ive had the entire cinema to myself! Ghost stories should be headed to horror cult classic level one day.
It blows other ghost films like Paranormal Activity outta the water and does so with a small hudget and without the need to jolt the audience with cheap shock tactics. Ive been a horror buff since I was 10 and ive seen thousands over the years so im not easy to impress or scare but this film did both.
It may be a throwback to the films of Hammer and Amicus but it mixes those influences with more modern paranormal films. The movie has a genuine dark and gloomy feel and the 3 stories are quite unsettling even for a jaded horror buff.
The scares come in a lingering dark vision rather than shock tactics, it has elements of psychological thriller crossed with bleak hopeless visions. The film uses its twists and turns to perfection, leaving the viewer questioning the outcomes and whats real vs unreal.
Overall I left the cinema feeling confused, distracted and slightly scared! Very well done and one of the finest horrors in 5 years.
