After a great opening special effect, 'Ghost Ship' goes downhill fast and somehow makes a ghost story even more absurd. However, there's so much more wrong with the film, such as bad acting, bad writing, and other than the above mentioned effect, bad cgi.
Avoid and rent 'Poltergeist': a much better ghost film.
