Review of Ghost Ship (1992) by Dougal S — 04 Jul 2010
A pretty hefty cast are pulled together in this remake of the original cult classic and don't actually make too bad a job of it.
A bunch of maritime salvagers stumble upon a drifting Italian cruise liner, believed to have disappeared in 1962 and set about to turn their find into profit. Once they board the liner however things take a turn for the creepy and lo and behold they start getting offed one by one.
Unfortunately the original is still on my 'to-watch' list so I can't compare the two but this version certainly delivers on the chills and atmosphere. Following the usual horror film standards the cast conspire to get split up while the ship begins to turn against them.
The violence is largely kept at a minimum with the marquee effect being used up in the first five minutes so it's the atmosphere of a ghost story that the film relies on. Even the final 'twist' )which had been obvious for some time) works in it's own way.
Worth a watch if you like ghost stories. But if you're easily creeped out then don't watch alone - you might never go on a cruise ship again.
