Review of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011) by C.j. H — 01 Jul 2013
Why can't we just have a good Ghost Rider film?
To the film's credit, there is some cool imagery, and the Ghost Rider himself does look pretty great.
Everything else though. Any film where they make Idris Elba a dis-likable character, when he's supposed to be likable, has a problem. This film has a problem.
The direction just doesn't fit, as they try to use their Crank style in a Ghost Rider universe. The difference is that Crank is a straightforward, simple as simple can be, story. Ghost Rider is not. It results in a complete mess, where the story falls apart, and you are just left feeling cold.
This leads on nicely to the writing. And also to the fact that I don't understand why David S. Goyer keeps getting work. He was the main problem in man of Steel, and although he only co-wrote this film- this script is awful. Really, truly awful.
Another thing to mention is the fact that there is one classic 'Cage' moment, where he starts to turn into the Ghost Rider, whilst shouting at a random man with a phone in his mouth. That is all.
Yet I still want to see a third one. I just want a good Ghost Rider movie. Reboot this thing.
I'm sorry Nicolas, or Niccy, if you prefer that. I don't know. But you just don't work in these movies.
