Review of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011) by Ben C — 23 Jul 2013
Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance is a truly awful movie, not only is it an embarrassment to this character that is featured in the title, but it is an embarrassment to the superhero genre as a whole. So, it is a ever so slight downgrade from its predecessor.
Nicolas Cage reprises his role as Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance. In this gritty new vision for the character, directed by Neveldine/Taylor (Crank), Johnny is still struggling with his curse as the devil's bounty hunter - but he may risk everything as he teams up with the leader of a group of rebel monks (Idris Elba) to save a young boy from the devil... and possibly rid himself of his curse forever. -- (Sony).
The plot is that Johnny Blaze, played by Nicholas Cage, must protect a child from the devil and his forces. Sounds fun right? Well it is... for about 20 minutes. The rest of the film is complete dog shit. The plot is a nonsensical mess full of plot holes and outright stupid moments (In the end he turns into, basically the angel rider... I am serious). This script is poorly written and shows that whoever wrote it has no knowledge of the character, and the dialogue written is atrocious and unintentionally funny.
The acting here is a slight improvement, but seeing as how the acting in the previous film was some of the worst ever shown in a superhero movie that isn't saying much. Nicholas Cage still looks like he's on meth throughout the whole thing, and everyone else is barely trying. The only positive I have is that the special effects look decent.
Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance downright sucks. It is clear that it was meant to be campy fun, but that doesn't work with a character like this with an established history, and it ends up being shit because of it.
