Review of Ghost in the Shell (2017) by Kathleen W — 09 Apr 2017
2 stars for the visuals. Weird sense of dislocation throughout. I usually try to look at remakes or adaptations as stand-alone pieces, to give them a chance, but it's not easy when they're literally re-creating so many iconic scenes and images with incredible detail.
You're back in this place but this time you're not confused, and that's a problem. ghostintheshell, for me, was always about having my head hurt. Feeling like I would understand if only they'd stop with the fight scenes for like a second.
Simplified and heartless like we expected but it's the closest I've gotten to being back in this kind of sci-fi landscape for a while.
