Much like the main character, Ghost in the Shell is missing a heart. And the lack of emotion almost makes this feel like a science fiction demo reel instead of a major motion picture. It's got some impressive visual effects, but that's about it.
It's not that surprising that this movie didn't succeed at the box office.
