Review of Ghost in the Shell (2017) by Darkly_Tranquil — 23 Apr 2017
If you are a fan of the 1995 film, or just like anime or cyberpunk in general, there is a lot to enjoy here, even if its not perfect. The film is visually spectacular with some fantastic production design in sets, costumes, etc.
, though the visual effects are a bit hit and miss, being top notch in some scenes, and kind of cheap in others. The direction is strongest when it copies Mamoru Oshii's film, but is merely serviceable the rest of the time.
The acting performances are all solid, though no-one really stands out, and the material doesn't really give anyone much scope to shine. The story is probably the weak point, as it introduces a lot of ideas and concepts from the manga, but just doesn't have the space to really go anywhere with them, so the plot ends up being a fairly basic "who am I?/corporate villainy" story line.
Overall GitS is a must for fans of the anime and cyberpunk, and probably worth a shot if you just like scifi in general.
