Review of Ghost in the Shell (2017) by Horrucide — 01 Apr 2017
God Damn that was awful, you know it's bad when you go into a movie with rock bottom expectations and it still manages to disappoint you.
Plays like a bad remake of Robocop 2014 (let that sink in for a moment) with a smattering of the greatest hits of GitS.
A bland, underdeveloped mess of a film without any of the nuance of Mamoru Oshii's original film version. The entire cast sleepwalks their way through bland hamfisted exposition (even Takeshi Kitano seems to be phoning it in) with the exception of Kaori Momoi who gives a good performance.
Clint Mansell & Lorne Balfe's score while decent is just more sci-fi ambience and lacks the soul of Kenji Kawaii's original (or the subtle meaning that it contained).
It's a real shame that this couldn't have been directed by someone like Neil Blomkamp or Alex Garland. Because after seeing this I wouldn't trust Rupert Sanders to direct traffic.
