Review of Ghost in the Shell (2017) by Marley S — 03 Apr 2017
I came into the movie trying to ignore the criticism I'd already heard. I've found that in general movies are more enjoyable if you come in as a blank slate. This method proved effective as I enjoyed it more than most other people I discussed the film with.
It's immediate strong points were the soundtrack and the beauty of the world created in the film. Aesthetically, it was a great film but plot wise it was different. As the plot wore on, something about it felt lacking, like the ideas were there but it fell through. The timing just didn't feel right, with so much in the first five minutes and then lots of weird plot devices after. Certain parts were really good and others felt like they were trying too hard.
Overall the film was average. I wouldn't see it again or necessarily recommend it to many people but I enjoyed certain aspects of it. I'd be curious to watch the original.
