Review of Ghost in the Shell (2017) by Sean M — 05 Apr 2017
I found this film release to be very good. I thought it honoured and respected it's source material whilst presenting a core theme and story that would appeal to a broader audience. I thought the visual concept and direction was excellent, it really did bring the world of the original out of manga animation into the real world and quite 'blade Runner' 'esque.
As with any 'reboot' it is not enough to do a simple copy of the original and ultimately end up with a poor immitation, and I challenge GITS 'purists' to ask themselves if that is really what they wanted! I felt shifting the story toward big bad corporate and building a back-story for the major that linked to this, presents a more digestable storyline.
Additionally, having this then develop from a common genis for both the major and cutter gave an opportunity to provide an emotinal link with the audience, aprticularly the family history piece. All in all a very good film and one that certainly deserves better than the current rating on this site.
