Review of Ghost in the Shell (2017) by Ethan M — 05 Apr 2017
The Movie Ghost in the Shell, is a modern day remake of a classic anime. This movie takes place in the future, and is in a world where everyone has cyborg enhancements. The main character, major, is the first of her kind. She is 100% robotic, in terms of her body, but has a human mind. Not being an anime fan or have watched any anime in my life, I am not so sure how this movie correlates in terms of accuracy with the classic. Having that in mind, I rate this movie 3.7/5 Stars.
This movie was a good movie, but has a lot of flaws, which I will focus on. My main issues for the movie are that throughout the movie, there were scenes which have no contribution to the plot in any way. The director just threw them in during low points into the plot to catch audience attention again; signs of poor storyboarding. My main other beef with this movie is the ending. Everything works out for mostly everyone. However, things feel unfinished. I was not satisfied. I feel that the director made up with this by having Major say some cheesy motivational quote at the end.
Overall, this movie was pretty decent. You can clearly tell that it was targeted at men (explosions, guns, gore, almost naked Scarlett Johansson, etc.). The ending leaves you uneasy, and the beginning has a very slow buildup. So if you're looking for a movie with a poorly constructed plot, with lots of explosions and fight scenes, intermixed with very boring and sometimes pointless scenes, then this movie is the perfect way to spend 2 hours of your time.
