Review of Ghost in the Shell (2017) by Phil S — 11 Apr 2017
It should have been more ambitious, more thought-provoking, and rated R. However even within Ghost in the Shell's unfortunate constraints, it's a visual splendor that otherwise is quite respectful to the 1995 anime film it's based on, with well-choreographed shot-for-shot recreations of the original film's iconic moments, and a surprisingly diverse cast despite unnecessary controversies surrounding the main female lead.
The movie even manages to make some small improvements over the original by offering up some actual character development for the Major instead of just having her wax philosophical the whole time. In the end, Ghost in the Shell 2017 succeeds at invoking the unsettling feelings it aims for as it depicts the merging of technology and humanity, and while the amnesia plot is a little rote and over-reliant on cliches at times, I was never bored with this film and it's just slick enough to pass for being a solid, good sci-fi flick.
It's just too bad that it didn't go any further than that.
