Review of Ghost in the Shell (2017) by Brandon R — 12 Apr 2017

I'll say this first. I was worried about this film. Mainly because the original is so conceptual and will go over most viewers heads. The original film is not simply meant to be an action movie. It poses questions and is much deeper.

So I expect the ratings on the live action to be mixed. That's exactly what we have here. With that said, this film is very good. It's not great but it for once stays true to the original source material.

It recreates the saga for a main stream audience. If you want a deeper, richer experience watch the original. Be prepared to THINK. If you want the abridged version you have this movie to fall on. The visuals are some of the best I've seen in years.

The SCIFI world is one I would want to visit. Seeing the anime style come to life left me smiling the entire time. At its core, the overall story wasn't as confusing as I remember. The part where you think is placed on the question of who and what Major is to society.

The film was also surprisingly short. I wanted to see more! But in the end I was not disappointed. What is disappointing is that most viewers won't appreciate what they are seeing here. This is a classic that was remade for fans.

It also happens to be the inspiration for most action films today. The Matrix was heavily influenced by the original Anime. So ironically we've seen so much of this style, we cannot truly appreciate the one that started it all.

But I will be glad to add this to my Blu Ray collection. See it knowing these things and I think you'll be pleased. And pay close attention to the musical score. It too deserves more recognition.
