Speaking as someone who didn't watch the Anime, this movie was fantastic! The art direction and production, is some of the best I've seen since in years. It does have slightly campy moments, much in the same sense as Tron, Terminator, Blade Runner etc.
, but in much in the same way, it carries them well. I highly recommend watching this movie, if nothing else, just to treat yourself to some of the best futuristic CG to this date.
