Review of Ghost in the Shell (2017) by Jak-Luke S — 23 Jul 2017
Begins with an immersive and rather spectacular first act with almost flawless production design and a with a strong score to suite, I was somewhat shocked. However, what follows is a conventional, boring and flat Hollywood blockbuster that is incredibly safe.
Performances are good but not great, apart from Kitano the film doesn't incorporate any engaging roles, due to such a weak and matter of fact script that at times is incredibly poor. The action is good and the tone is strong but the film misses every chance to make itself stand out from the crowd and do something different.
It doesn't explore the mythology it proposes and that's it's biggest issue and I can't help but feel it's what may kill any future momentum.
