Review of Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004) by Nalyd N — 20 Nov 2011
I'm not really sure what to think of this. The animation is indeed beyond anything I've ever seen, including Akira and any Miyazaki film, but I'm not entirely sure what it was about. I know there sere some sex androids, and a little girl was hooked up to some ghost-dubbing equipment, an some people die but there are so many curve-balls thrown at you that it becomes almost completely incoherent.
And I've seen the first film, plus the End of Evangelion. There's that, and for whatever reason, all the cars look like they were torn straight out of 1952. Not that it is a BAD thing per se, but I fail to see why the makers did that.
And it also lacks the gritty, dystopian feel of the first film, to the point where at least half of the movie is GLOWING GOLD. It almost feels like a fantasy film at times, especally given that over 80% of it is 3D CGI.
In the end, it is very fun an beautiful to watch, but can be rather incoherent, and feels almost nothing like the first film.
