Review of Ghost in the Shell (1995) by Joshua B — 20 Feb 2009
Ghost in the Shell is a classic of animation that's perfect for both anime virgins and fans; it's visually stunning and vibrant, lacking the sloppiness of some lazy anime, seamlessly blending traditional cell-animation with early computer imagery. The fantastic score and Mamoru Oshii's direction cement the film together as a work of art.
Its labyrinthine plot is one that benefits from repeat viewings, as do its complex philosophical themes. As a result, the film has immense lasting value, and its depth continues to unravel, from its ruminations on human evolution to its critique of rampant masculine Americanization. It's a feat of both animation and sci-fi, with staying power.
