Review of Ghost in the Shell (1995) by Kenneth L — 17 Apr 2009
It was quite obvious that this movie was a major influence on The Matrix (and, therefore, much subsequent science fiction). In fact, one or two elements of The Matrix are so similar to things in this movie that it almost seems like plagiarism.
The visuals are extremely detailed and well-done, and the film never ever lets you forget its computer-drenched settings. There is a lot of talking about the nature of humanity and the soul, which is admirable for a sci-fi anime.
There are really only a couple of action sequences, but they were quite good. I could only hear it in the English dub, which like most such dubs, was off-putting at times. The plot is complicated - I would probably have to watch it at least once more to really figure it out, but it's enough to sustain the movie.
If you have any interest in anime, science fiction, or The Matrix, watch it.
