Review of Ghost in the Shell (1995) by Robert C — 25 Feb 2010
This is apparently one of the great relics of the fledgling cyber-punk genre. There are elements of sci-fi, but it was hard to take the movie seriously when it becomes obvious that they use the words â??ghostâ?? and â??soulâ?? interchangeably -- souls exist and they may be measured or manipulated, copied and merged.
Animation-wise this film was decent, but a lot of the good elements and effects they used have been copied and cliched by now that GitS looks a bit stale when compared to more recent animation. Because I was reading the subtitles more than comprehending the spoken dialogue my regard for the story could be skewed, but screen action is a solid, easy to understand forward linear progression of scenes.
(Maybe there are some better subs out there?).
