Review of Ghost in the Shell (1995) by Phil P — 23 Aug 2012
A great sci-fi film that is only let down by the lofty heights it claims to have. The notion that this is amazing is wrong but that doesn't mean it isn't great. It's another example of something over hyped and loved to the point where some declare it 'perfect - it far from perfect.
Set in the near future where people are more like computers than human, Section 9 are tracking a super hacker 'The Puppet Master'. Ghost in the Shell tackles such questions as humanity and existence.
At the time visually it was ground-breaking and still holds up now - however the animations is minimal as is most anime and it can be frustrating. But the story at times is convoluted and pointlessly complicated. That's not to say it doesn't make sense but when a lot of plot is bible or philosopher quotes it gets irritating.
Overall G.I.T.S is a great sci-fi that suffers from over-hype syndrome and some awkward dialogue. Well worth a watch though.
