Review of Ghost in the Shell (1995) by Edward M — 22 Mar 2017
I watched the Japanese version not the English release, what vision, what artistry. Mamoru Oshii's 9th feature film anticipates the future of hybrid cybernetic bodies and human-android species, in a brooding, futuristic, visually stunning (thanks to the talents of designer and animator Hiroyuki Okiura) epic.
Kazunori It? wrote perhaps the best script for any anime film, and his musings on immortality, genes, evolution, the soul are deeply moving and thought-provoking. It is hard to imagine all of this was done in 1995! And it is even harder to imagine that the film will be whitewashed by Hollywood into some sappy, vapid, pastiche and released this year!
