Review of Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999) by Alex P — 02 May 2008
Certainly a unique movie. It is a strange mix of silliness and serious intensity, sometimes its hard to tell which. There are bits when the apparent intention is to remind you that you are watching a movie, and not to take things too seriously.
However pretentious it may seem, I think it was meant to seem pretentious. I'm not a super-big fan of the script, but the camera work, the music, and the tone in many parts of the movie are wonderful.
This is a necessary movie to watch to appreciate that movies do not necessarily have to comply with the rules.
