Review of Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999) by Paul B — 22 Jul 2009
Man... I like this movie. Forest Whitaker is seated into this role perfectly. He's balance as he struts, he's weight as he talks, and if you've never thought to link samurai with "cool" then now it makes perfect sense.
Can you make a pigeon be cool? Jim Jarmusch can. He blends hip-hop with the Sopranos, makes cartoons the reflection of dried out souls, and squeezes in a ghost bullet just because it feels right.
It's quiet, meditative and has rhythm. It didn't have to be, but it is and it's perfect.
