Review of Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999) by Stace W — 16 Oct 2009
A surprisingly original take on both the samurai and the gangster film with obvious but touching references to Melville's movies. Forest Whitaker is very good in this, and lends himself to the hard and emoitonless spirit of the samurai while simultaneously gathering our trust and admiration.
A contemporary soundtrack filled with RZA hip hop beats helps the pacing of the film and also with the urbanization of an ordinarily long-ago story.
