Review of Ghajini (2008) by Sapna S — 13 Jan 2009
I was very sceptical of this 'remake' of Memento. O God, I cringed. Then the Indian papers went berserk with great reviews and Indian audiences were raving. Ya, I thought this is what happens when a 'different' subject is put to a public that does not know any ''other' cinema.
Yeah, yeah, yeah Just like ROCK ON which is an average film about dudes and dreams that is predictable and with no payback. But Aamir is one of my favourite actors and I wanted to see the film in the name of clinical interest.
I was very pleasantly surprised. The idea maybe 'Memento' but the film is hardcore, commercial 'Indian' and very well made. Great acting by Aamir. One of his best yet. Asin is charming in a bit of a try-hard way.
Direction, production design-all super too. Nothing groundbreaking but fitting well with the scheme and picture. Rahman's music, especially the background score is super and enhances every scene. Keep your ears perked for the electric wire-short circuit sound in various places.
The climax is well crafted and shot. The catacombs of the brain played out in the maze of lanes in Mumbai....
