Review of Getaway (2013) by Frank L — 10 Sep 2013
Question: Why would Joel Silver and his studio hand the reigns to a director who's credits include "An American Haunting" and "Dungeons and Dragons?," with which both films--including the one under review are absolutely terrible; ney, they're beyond bad (like ha ha, these filmmakers had a bunch of heart that made a movie bad), no this is just plain rotten.
This movie had the potential to do something good with this material, as long as it was Ethan Hawke being the only person in the car. Casting Selena Gomez, no offense, proved to be a misguided move on the studios part in an effort to attract a younger demographic, thus undermining what the story could've been.
Its just painful to watch a person trying so hard to act, but fails so bad, it comes across as annoying and almost (teetering on completely) unwatchable. Compounded by the casting problem (among other things), the movie felt like it was made up as they went along.
Were the filmmakers that desperate in fusing movies like Nick of Time, Long Kiss Goodnight, Drive and Speed? This was an incoherent mess and deserved a release on Redbox, not a theatrical exhibition. What a waste.
