Review of Get the Gringo (2012) by John M — 25 May 2012
The weak-sauce story doesn't really drag down what is an amazing insight into what Mel Gibson imagines Mexican prison life to be like (I hardly believed a bit of it personally, but I'd be shocked if I was wrong), where inmates carry around guns, the top dogs have luxury penthouse suites with jacuzzis, and prisoners can pay for their families to come and live with them.
It's an amazing premise, and not easily swallowed, but all the same a very enjoyable film - if a little cutesy and neat at the end. Gibson (as much as I don't like the guy) gives a half decent performance as a cocky American career criminal who is slung in a Mexican prison to die, and manages to outwit his adversaries inside and on the outside, finding time along the way to become a father figure to a doomed child.
