Review of Get the Gringo (2012) by Paul P — 03 Jun 2012
A genuinely entertaining oddity from Mel and co.
Watching Mel go back to the 80's/90's well is something of a mixed blessing in so far as we know that he is capable of far more but also the fact that he does these types of films better than pretty much everyone out there which makes this a comforting film as you know you are in safe hands.
The set up is pretty simple with Mel's unnamed crim locked up in a Mexican jail which closely resembles hell. The story itself is pretty flimsy but it does become more involving the more we learn. The violence is pretty full on and the success of the film comes down to Mel and his ability to portray characters like this and find something likeable in them.
Great vicious fun.....
