Review of Get the Gringo (2012) by Mike R — 16 May 2012
I don't often write film reviews, but when I do, it's for Mel Gibson, because I just love that guy. Mel Gibson is far too intelligent to be a racist, and it's very obvious that there are media owners and other wider interests that would seek to destroy his career because of the real issues and powerful poignant messages that he injects into his work. It's obvious in the things others say that they are confused by the level of high intelligence that goes into his art and the portrayal of a racist, even those who want to believe. But, whatever you believe about the hype coming from the lame-stream media (and lets be honest, when was the last time they DIDN'T lie or obfuscate the facts in their "duty" to their corporate owners) or not, this movie is an easy 10/10. When does Mel not bring a sense of reality even to a crazy impossible plot such as this one - and that is one of his gifts to the audience in a world where corporate entertainment ceaselessly encourages us to believe that all is well with the world, even when they show us it is not. I love Mel Gibson flicks, I'll be honest, but this one is definitely one of his better ones even so (excepting his three masterpieces, Apocalypto, Braveheart and The Patriot). It's extremely entertaining from the start, Gibson has only gotten better with age, his flare and live-wired approach is tempered by an excellent performance that drags you in irresistibly and gives you an awesome time as well as making you care for the characters that would otherwise be invisible. His writing is superb, as is his production - it's modern and fast all his own. If you know Gibson's other works there is a not so subtle direct towards how the massive drug trade between Mexico and the USA namely channeled via elements of corporate America is conducted. Like the Mexican cop says to the US cop at the start of the film "We are corrupt, You are corrupt, there is one difference, we are honest about it". Gibson, you rock, don't ever stop making films buddy, there are many people out there who love you and support you and know what a great human being you are. Your films mean so much to so many, and their message about freedom and in this case, showing what a devastatingly failed corrupt state looks like, and what happens in amongst the cess pool of evil that can eventuate if we allow it are obviously things that certain corporate masters don't want people to see, so they call you a racist and try to drive you out of town.
My opinion is that if you took the voters of this film who gave it a 0 because they thought he was a racist, never saw the film but simply saw it as a social duty, and left them out of the vote, this film would be on popular vote a 98 percenter for sure. I give it 100%.
