Review of Get the Gringo (2012) by Dan D — 28 Jul 2012
After all the controversy that Mel Gibson has been put through in the recent years, and off screen turmoil that one would argue brought upon himself, "Get The Gringo" brings Gibson back into the action hero world a little better then most people would have expected.
Granted, it is definitely not on the same caliber as "Braveheart," "The Patriot," or the "Lethal Weapon" series, but Mel still shows he can hold his own in front of the camera.
Pretty generic plot here, guy gets arrested and thrown into jail, hoping to adapt to his new surroundings and make an escape if possible. Gibson can still act, there's no doubt about that, but I think the best acting came from the child star of the film Kevin Hernandez, who befriends Gibson when he's tossed into prison.
You will recognize this little actor from "The Sitter" starring Jonah Hill, but in this film, Hernandez actually gets to take a bigger and more important role that actually shows the kid can act.
The action sequences in the film are not anything crazy, they won't make you say "Oooo" or "Aaaaaah," but they work, and actually has a pretty decent shoot-out inside the prison, or the world's shittiest mall.
One to rent, not really sure if it's one I'd buy for keeps. 3/5 JD.
