Review of Get Smart (2008) by Tim V — 10 Aug 2012
Missed it by THAT much.
It was close, but Steve Carell is no Don Adams and Astle and Ember are not Brooks and Henry. The set ups are nearly there but the subtle humour is missing, left out apparently in favour of simple prat falls.
Steve Carrell's Maxwell Smart gets his job done because he actually is competent where Don Adams Maxwell Smart got his job done in spite of his incompetence. The preposterous plot devices were also missing, as was the humour that came from Smart overestimating the competence or even commitment of his nemesis.
Too bad they didn't get the cameo of Barbara Feldon.
