Review of Get Out (2017) by Keith H — 24 Jan 2018
Overall a good movie. But it's criminally overrated.
The film revolves around an interracial couple as they spend the weekend with the white half's parents. Once they're at Rose's parents house it becomes apparently clear that something is amiss. A group of white people arrive at the house and are immediately obsessed with Chris. There is a slow reveal about the Armitage's ulterior motives. And the film eventually degrades into a typical horror thriller.
If the overtly racial overtones weren't there the film's plot of white people forcibly swapping bodies with black people could be replaced. Such as old people forcibly swapping bodies with younger bodies. Or handicapped people forcibly swapping bodies with able-bodied people. Maybe it's a good thing that it most likely won't spawn a sequel. I wouldn't want to endure Get Out 2: Electric Boogaloo or Get Out 3: Get In, and the inane variations of the film's body swapping idea.
Lil Rel Howrey gives a great performance as Chris' TSA agent friend Rod. He provides great comic relief as the paranoid and overly serious glorified security guard. I could see him having a great career as a comedic actor.
Overall a decent movie with a non ending. Check out "The Invitation" if you want to be truly shocked!
