Review of Get Out (2017) by Asher K — 10 Apr 2018
O As someone who generally avoids horror movies, it takes something truly unique and intriguing to get me in the theater. Months after release, and after nearly universal praise and urging of friends, I finally watched Get Out, and absolutely loved it.
Fans of Key and Peele will recognize Jordan Peele's signature style in the composition of the story, as he has an individual ability to twist a premise to defy convention and expectations. The best thriller movies, in my opinion, derive their horror not from jump scares, musical cues, or gore but from the psychological impact of their premise, introducing ideas so affecting as to horrify and provoke thought and conversation far beyond viewing; Get Out is well acted, a perfect mix of humor and fright, and briskly paced, but it's that disturbing premise that puts it over the top as one of the best directorial debuts in recent memory.
