Review of Get Out (2017) by Ian B — 31 Dec 2017
I'm writing this review for Get Out to tell you not to read any reviews for Get Out. Seriously, the less you know about this movie going in, the better. As Frank Costanza would say, "I like to go in fresh!".
I'm certainly glad I did, so I'll keep this short and spoiler-free. Jordan Peele's directorial debut has horror, humour and plenty of social commentary. It's refreshingly original, and at the same time has a lot of fun playing with classic genre conventions.
In fact, Get Out reminded me a lot of The Twilight Zone...so it now makes perfect sense that Peele is working on a new version of the groundbreaking series. The performances are universally terrific, the script is extremely smart and timely, the film builds tension and suspense extraordinarily well, and Peele has cemented himself as an exciting new voice in the genre.
Get Out is one of the best, and boldest, horror films to come out in quite some time. Highly recommended.
