Review of Get Out (2017) by Genine H — 05 Jul 2018
Horror movies have become somewhat passé. Instead of finely crafted and unique storylines, most movies of the genre are slasher flicks, with a few amazing exceptions; Get Out is one of them.
The most suspenseful and truly scariest horror films interject the horror of human behavior, our potential for great evil. Jordan Peele has decided to examine the fallacy of a "post racist" America in the wake of our first Black President, twisting the concept of eugenics and allowing our Black protagonist to do what few Black people do in this genre: survive the first half hour!
Sharp writing, carefully thought out scenes and superb acting all come together to create a horror movie that has its share of blood but also a peek into the banality of evil. The characters resonate well and are believable as well as likeable, at least as we first meet them all. The brevity of he film was my only disappointment, and to avoid spoilers, all I can truly add is you will spend the last half hour gripping your seat; remember to breathe! Peele has also carefully hidden some allegories you might not catch with all the action, so it would be prudent to keep your eye "peeled" for them (pun intended!).
Overall, I would highly recommend this movie!
