Review of Get On Up (2014) by Joyce B — 23 Jul 2014
This seemed like a good film until Chadwick Boseman started breaking the fourth wall. That may work in a stage production, but for me, it doesn't look good in a film. While Boseman gave a strong performance, it came across as him "playing" James Brown rather than "being" him.
When Jamie Fox played Ray Charles in "Ray," he won the Oscar because he was Ray Charles. There was no acting. That magic was non-existent in Boseman's portrayal of The Godfather of Soul.
A stellar supporting cast (Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and a cameo by Allison Janney) kept this movie alive. It would have been nice to see them get more screen time. The script gets a B-.
