Review of Get On Up (2014) by Rob P — 02 Sep 2014
Well, you had me at "sex machine." This is a powerful biopic, not unsympathetic but entirely without needless sentiment. You want to see how a truly flawed genius becomes both flawed and genius, here's your movie.
Chadwick Boseman goes for broke in this one, unleashing a furious performance that belied his restraint in 42 (I just thought he might have been boring, but I was wrong). The cast is an all-star black Hollywood troupe doing a movie close to their hearts, and everyone kills it.
JB led a complex life, and the movie's timeline is a fitting time-traveling integration of all the complexity that was the Godfather. I think we still got some more funk in the trunk.
