Review of Get On Up (2014) by Barbara J — 08 Aug 2014
This is a perfect movie for the Old Geezers Who Go To The Matinee Alone. Most of us were in our teens or early 20s when James Brown broke out. While 'white' radio stations would not play him, or Little Richard et al.
, we found ways to listen to pirate radio or Wolfman Jack on XERF-AM broadcasting our of Ciudad Acuña in Mexico. James Brown opened up the way for legions of other black musicians and set the stage for Elvis.
The movie is pretty well put together, albeit confusing at times. Chadwick Boseman is becoming the go-to guy for black biography films and he is spot on in this one. The music is terrific, the action is above par, and the story is just great.
Go and be happy.
