Review of Get Low (2010) by Jovon T — 19 Apr 2011
A fantastic piece of acting by all those involved. Robert Duvall is tremendous...but then again, when isn't he? Bill Murray is a delight, but then again, when isn't HE? This movie tells the story of Felix Bush, a backwoods hermit who's got a secret, and who wants to have a living funeral. Cue humourous bits with serious overtones, a well done period piece for character actors to chomp their teeth into. Suffice it to say, with someone other than Duvall, Felix would have been a caricature, a farce, and his final speech obvious instead of moving and powerful. No wonder some critics were suggesting he'd be nominated for Oscar. Bill Murray brings Frank Quinn the Undertaker a very funny dimension trying to make as much off of the funeral 'party' as he can. Lucas Black is the conscience of the film, and great supporting work by Sissy Spacek, Bill Cobbs and Major Dad himself, Gerald McRaney.
The one downside of this film is that I had the ending pegged about 1/2 the way in. That being said, the strength of the actors involved was enough to get me invested to finish and enjoy the film. Part of it can be attributed to first time director Schneider, but if you want to just sit back and marvel and 2 of the all time greats in Duvall and Murray back and forth, then you're in for a treat.
