Review of Get Low (2010) by Sham K — 30 Jul 2011
This was a fantastic little discovery. Robert Duvall leads a great cast in the fascinating and really intriguing story of a kooky backwoods hermit with a dark past who, after pondering his mortality, decides to throw a living funeral party wherein he invites a bunch of people to tell stories about him.
It's an odd premise, but it's also rather cool. The specific story at hand is original, but apparently has basis on actual accounts and folklore. The film is less about the story and more of a character study that touches upon themes of guilt, redemption, and trying to unravel the mystery of who people are.
This is definitely Duvall's movie, and he's the only one right for the lead. It's a great performance that is a joy to watch. Bill Murray is also great as the funeral home director. Lucas Black is okay, but a little bland as Murray's assistant.
The film also does a good job of capturing the look of the 1930s, although the story is timeless and could happen at any point. It's a good little film with some strong messages and great people behind it.
