Review of Get Low (2010) by Erno K — 24 Oct 2011
Felix Bush (Robert Duvall) is a Tennessee recluse who lives on the outskirts of town in the woods all by himself. Felix is a recluse to the point that he is constantly in town gossip, as the bitter evil old man.
Felix decides to have a living funeral and invites the entire town to come share all the stories they tell about the man. He emplores the help of Buddy (Lucas Black), a employee of a funural company, the two set the plan in motion.
As they get closer to the big day we come to learn that Felix has been hiding a dark secret from his past for over 40 years, which inevitably is why he became such a recluse in the first place. Get Low is a well structured strong story about a man seeking forgiveness from the demons of the past.
This is the definition of a character study and films does a great job of slowly peeling away layers of this tough, rugged man revealing his past. Robert Duvall creates a multi-dimensional character which is both incredibly strong but also tender and frail beneath.
Not that its surprising, but he really elevates the film.
