OVERALL GRADE: B.

BOTTOM LINE: "Get Low" is an intriguing mystery as well as a showcase of talent for the film's wonderful cast.

"Get Low" hinges itself on Robert Duvall's performance. Thankfully, Duvall knocks it out of the park. He plays a hermit named Felix Bush. Bush is a legend in his local Tennessee town. He has hidden himself in the woods for many years, sparking stories to be told about him. He surprises the town when he comes in looking for someone to host a funeral for him---while he's still alive. His request is met by a local funeral parlor managed by Bill Murray's character. As the funeral plans are made, the mystery of Bush's past starts to unravel itself to the audience, as well as the concerned assistant to Murray (Lucas Black).

This film works well because it is so well cast. Duvall should have gotten the Oscar nomination for his performance. He owns the screen for the film's runtime. Murray is sleak and witty as the mundane parlor manager. Lucas Black also shines as the straight man of the film. Sissy Spacek and Bill Cobbs round out the strong cast. Director Aaron Schneider captures the right tone for the film and shows promise for his future career. For a first time effort, I'd say he did a great job.

I really didn't have any lingering problems with this film. It's like a well-oiled machine that does its job, and does it well. This film is nothing spectacular or mind-blowing, but it's good enough to warrant a recommendation. Overall, "Get Low" has some fine performances and a great story.
