Review of Get Hard (2015) by Norberto F — 21 Jun 2015
Get Hard is a funny-enough idea torpedoed by a script that has undying commitment to one central gag that is not funny now, or ever was; prison rape. Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart have some comedic chemistry but literally every other second are talking about avoiding being raped in prison, or Ferrell's character is using tired-as-hell racist stereotypes and for some reason, Hart's character just tolerates it.
The supporting cast is much funnier, but don't get a lot of screen time. The likes of Alison Brie, Craig T. Nelson, and even the rapper, T.I. have some really funny moments with the T.I. scenes easily being the highlight for me.
The central story is a clever one with an overly rich, asshole having to toughen up to survive in prison and the training scenes show promise, but the filmmakers always go for the easy, crude joke and they rarely hit.
The second half is much better than the first with some consistent chuckles but I never had one good belly-laugh; and that's a problem. If you're a big fan of Ferrell and Hart, I guess give it a chance, but if you're growing tired of the same old crap used again and again for jokes: skip it.
