Review of Get Carter (1971) by Rod A — 26 Sep 2009
An essay on tenacity and ruthlessness. Caine has a comfy situation as an enforcer for the mob. Yet, when his brother dies a suspicious death, he risks his livelihood to get the real story. Offering a gritty portrait of working-class England, the film effectively creates a suffocating atmosphere.
Caine runs into all kinds of obstacles trying to solve his brother's murder. No one around him wants him to succeed. His world has turned against him. This film works at a slow pace, but builds to an exciting climax.
Caine is alternately sentimental and savage.
