Review of Gertrud (1964) by Kris K — 19 Nov 2008
As all relationships take patience, so does this. Dreyer's long takes, long dialogue, and subtle direction captures us into the world of a woman simply looking for perfect love. Obviously as many of us know, love is not perfect, and here, we can truly feel the anxiety and suffering that not only Gertrude bears, but also her lovers.
I believe this whole picture is about love, but also contradiction. Gertrud's lover's are not all top notch, but she herself, leaves no room to bend with any of the relationships, essentially setting her up for what may be what she really wanted anyway.
