Review of Gerry (2002) by Ben W — 21 Nov 2004
Gerry - Works as pure intrigue and really succeeds in getting under your skin. Even though it can be tough to sit through at the time, Van Sant's direction will stay with you for a long time.
Dawn of the Dead (1978) - It's cheap, gory, and surprisingly witty. Gets many-a-laughs from your humble narrator and a few instances of fear (for the characters, not for me). If you're looking for a good scare, don't turn to this flick, but if you're looking for a witty zombie-classic, you've found your home.
Sideways - Extremely funny. Think 'About Schmidt' plus about 100 more laughs. It has its times of heartfelt sadness/depression, but comes off as more of a comedy than 'About Schmidt' did. Go out and see this movie, you'll laugh your head off.
Finding Neverland - I enjoyed it, but I just could not get into it at all. Everybody around me (at least the women) all seemed to be fairly touched, but the dude wearing the Peter Pan costume with girlfriend Tinkerbell walked out as the credits started looking a bit disappointed.
Before Sunrise - A really out-of-the-blue surprise that shocked me at how real and, to be honest, brilliant it was. Some of the conversations were filled with intrigue...wait, I take that back, every conversation that was put from pen to film had intrigue. There wasn't a boring moment in this film of Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy talking for 100 mins---just imagine that.
