Review of Gerry (2002) by Matt G — 27 Feb 2008
Either you like Gus, or you don't. This is his least accessible film that I've seen. Still very ambitious, which is what I love about him. Everything feels natural. There is not a cinematic moment in it, which is what I love.
He is the closest thing to a modern version of Robert Bresson that I've ever seen, breaking down an audience's every expectation. Plotwise, it is fairly simple. The two Gerrys get lost in the wild and sort of get swallowed up.
I guess the film could be considered a journey through Mother Nature's digestive system, and a test to see if man can survive getting excreted out. I'm glad I saw this, it is getting me pumped for Paranoid Park in a little over a month.
