Review of Gerry (2002) by Aaron M — 31 Jul 2009
I am not sure everyone will enjoy this flick. Everything is shot so slow, which may leave the viewer feeling bored or even confused. If you catch yourself thinking something profound or interesting is going to happen after most scenes, you'll be disappointed. There are many MANY long shots *can't call them scenes, per se* that may leave you expecting more. For instance, watching a sunrise may seem like a chore to sit through as may the slow-moving 360* camera work circling around Casey Affleck's facial features.
Therefore, get the image of Survivorman out of your head and think smaller. Imagine yourself alone in the middle of a desert with no food or water. Think from within when watching this flick. Don't wait for external things to happen. You'll be surprised with what you'll take from the film after thinking it through after your first viewing.
That's basically all I can tell ya without giving too much away.
P.S. Casey Affleck is great in this film in an understated way. To me, he out-shined Matt Damon. Both his subtlety and quiet dignity make him a gem of an actor.
